Most Family Lythraceae plants are adapted to damp soils; square stems, opposite or whorled leaves; flowers, bisexual, regular; 4,6 or 8 sepals and the same number of petals, twice the number of stamens as petals, in two circles, short and long; the ovary is positioned superior, or halfway in between on some, and consists of 2 to 6 carpels; fruit, a capsule with several to numerous seeds.
